"What if Someone Sees Me?" My Biggest Fear About Booking a Boudoir Session.
About ten years ago, before I created The Cowshed and started boiudoir, I decided to experience it myself. That way I would have a better understanding of how it felt and what clients need to get the most from the experience.
I'll admit it - I was beyond nervous!
I wasn't worried about being photographed in lingerie. Ok, so I was really conscious of how I looked, but what I found most scary and kept me from booking was much simpler... ...What if someone sees me?
Not the finished photographs—I knew I could choose what happened to those. It was everything around the experience that made me hesitate. What if the studio was on a busy high street? What if I walked in and bumped into someone I knew? What if people driving past could see inside? What if I'd feel exposed before I'd even stepped in front of the camera?
Privacy mattered to me every bit as much as the photographs themselves. The more I thought about it, the more I realised I wasn't looking for just a photographer. I was looking for somewhere I could completely relax.
That's why I created Rebelliously Sensual in the location it is. The studio isn't on a busy high street, or hidden in the corner of a commercial building. It's based at The Cowshed, a beautiful studio nestled within the Monmouthshire countryside, reached via a long private driveway and surrounded by fields. It's by appointment only, so there isn't a waiting room full of strangers or people wandering in and out. It is a calm, peaceful space designed to help you slow down and breathe.
From a business point of view it makes my marketing much tougher - I have no passing trade - but from a client's point of view I wouldn't have it any other way. It is a very special place and that makes enormous difference.
Because confidence doesn't magically appear the moment you step in front of the camera. It starts much earlier. It starts with knowing you won't feel rushed, watched or self-conscious before your session has even begun.
And then there's the other element. Privacy isn't only about where the studio is, it's about how you're treated.
It's about having someone who understands that you're probably arriving with butterflies in your stomach. Someone who doesn't expect you to know how to pose, who doesn't rush you, and who creates an atmosphere where you can simply be yourself. That's the kind of privacy I think we don't talk about enough...
...The emotional kind.
The freedom to laugh when you feel awkward.
To take a moment if you need one.
To be seen without feeling judged.
When I imagine my ideal boudoir experience now, I don't picture lingerie or poses first. I picture driving down a quiet country lane, leaving the noise of everyday life behind, walking into a peaceful studio where nobody expects me to be anything other than myself.
Because privacy give you Freedom. Freedom to enjoy an experience that's entirely yours.
The right boudoir photographer won't just create beautiful photographs - they'll create an environment where you feel safe enough to forget the camera is even there. And that's when the real magic begins.
